Figure 2 below is taken from Tamashiro et, 2009 demonstrating the relationship between planktonic and biofilm bacteria. Once the bacteria make contact with mucous membrane the biofilm begins to form. Planktonic bacteria can be released form the biofilm.
Fig 2 below was taken form Loussert et al, 2010. It is an Electron Microscope photo of the biofilm (ECM, arrows) surrounding the hyphae (H) of Aspergillus fumigatus in the lungs of a mouse infected with the fungus.
